If you have to drive 2 hours to see it in IMAX 3D, DO IT!

Other than an awesome story, I can say without a doubt, Cameron has mastered 3D CGI. It looks real and not cheesy gimmicky.

Fucking awesome movie. Seeing it again next week for sure.

The nearest IMAX theater is three hours away and they aren't showing it =(

They have some cheesy documentary about penguins running all week. Tards.

I only drove 30 min, but after seeing it, I'd say its worth 2 hours to see in imax 3D. You pretty much have to see it in 3D to get cameron's "idea". The technology he created to make the film is probably going to be the standard from now on.

The plot was good, but nothing new. Its the eye candy and the ability to relate to cgi characters that makes it awesome.

Why so much hate for this movie I wonder. Yeah it's a lil bit schlocky but wtf, the tech is awesome. And I think it's been number one for 4 weeks running?

Though actually, after seeing the Golden Globes results, I have to say that I don't believe Avatar deserves the best picture. The Hurt Locker was a far the better movie in terms of content and story. But people are dazzled by the special effects (new technology or not), and the drama that went on in making movie, and hence I believe that's a huge factor of it winning. But eh, it's just another movie.

The "wow" effect from seeing it in imax 3d was well worth my money and my time. The story began great, but the end was cheesy.
I didn't have any expectations about the movie except kickass 3d on a gigantic screen, and that was definitely a success.

A decent movie, but I regret seeing it in 3D. The picture never synced for me completely, and my eyes kept trying to focus on anything in the foreground. My eyes were sore by the end of the movie.

I liked the movie a lot. The gf thought it was a bit long, but I was constantly in awe of the colors, graphics, and scenery.

I recommend going a 2nd time. Since you know the plotline, you tend to look at all the detail in the backround and scenery. I noticed a shit-ton of stuff the 2nd time, These guys made fucking bird nests in trees that were like 30 miles away!

there is an imax theater with 4 imax screens and 26 regular ones 10 minutes from my house and then there's the one at henry ford museum, but I wont support the ford corporation in any way shape or form. I didn't go see it because i heard while it was visually stunning the story and acting didn't hold up.

question for you martokk...

Are you so hard up for cash that you won't go see a movie that as of today has earned over 1.8 billion dollars in ticket sales making it the most successful movie of all time, ever btw, simply because you've "heard" that the acting didn't hold up.

I'm not saying watching this movie will cure aids or anything, but I'm pretty sure you could give up twelve bucks and three hours of your time to atleast see the movie and form your own opinion of it.

Also I bet you've already seen it, but enjoy holding up the pretense that you are the most paranoid conspiracy theory person to ever walk the internet.

Seriously not watching this movie, atleast once, is really kinda dumb at this point. Hate it or love, seeing it is the only way you'll get an accurate "critique" imo.

In my opinion the acting did hold up. It's very difficult to portray emotion to an animated character. The main reason why Disney, back in the days of cell animations, and Pixar in CGI are so highly esteemed is because of their ability to make their characters seem and feel "human".

Avatar brought it to a whole new dimention. To me, Sam Worthington did his best acting as "alien" Jake Sully, "human" Jake Sully was a little flat, but I'll forgive him since he's an aussie trying to speak with an American accent. Stephen Lang is amazing as the colonel.

I do agree that the plot has been done. A combination of a "A New World", "Fern Gully", "Dances with Wolves", probably tens of books. There was nothing new or inventive about the plot at all. Whether or not the idea for the script was formulated before World of Warcraft, someone who played the game can't help but wonder if the scenery wasn't all based on Nagrand or Zanggarmarsh.

Avatar is a movie experience. It's one of the few movies that is different to just describe to someone. Watch it once in 3D, that experience will be difficult to capture even it the best of HDTVs.

I haven't seen Avatar yet. It seems like it will be very impressive visually but fairly mediocre otherwise.

Maybe I'll take a long lunch one day this week and go see it ... I'd hate to not catch it in a theater.

yea....10K for tv 1K for 3d blu ray player, and 50$ to own the entire collection of 3d media, all 2 of them.

The story was good for me because it was the first time I totally overlooked cgi as "not real". I thought the points he wanted to make were made, and they are all fine and dandy, but the characters were completely real. I didnt think of them as cgi aliens, they seemed more like people in a shitload of makeup. That's the money. then all those bells and whistles with the flies and the canopy's, and the floaty islands of doom.

Yeah, I agree with Raven. This is the first time I think that CGI was truly seamless for me. I can't recall one spot where "yeah that looks fake." Nor could Evaren, and she's not a sci-fi fan at all.

Well, watched Avatar over the weekend. It was about what I expected. The CGI was really impressive, the story was pretty cookie cutter. Hopefully other movies will look at it as the bar to try and surpass when it comes to their CGI. Also, hopefully James Cameron will get someone else to write his movies ... Battle Angel could be really awesome assuming he let's someone else contribute on the script. Don't become George Lucas ...
